Plant modifications

Repair or plant modification: why the distinction matters

A repair aims to restore an existing engineering basis. A modification changes something that may affect that basis—duty, geometry, load path, controls, safety function, materials or interfaces.

A repair is not defined by how small it looks

Adding a gusset, increasing plate thickness or moving a support may appear conservative, but it can redirect load, increase local stiffness or transfer demand into a different part of the asset.

Ask what changed

Compare the proposed work with the original configuration and duty. If the work changes how the asset carries load or performs its safety function, treat the engineering basis explicitly rather than assuming the change is automatically beneficial.

Document the new basis

Where a modification is appropriate, record design assumptions, loads, materials, drawings, inspection requirements and verification so future maintainers know what the asset has become.

Engineering note

This article is general information only. Project-specific decisions depend on the actual asset, duty, material, condition, evidence, applicable standards and jurisdiction.
