Start with the decision
Is the concern global strength, local yielding, stiffness, buckling, fatigue, load transfer or a connection detail? The model should be built to answer that question at the level of fidelity the decision requires.
Model the real load path
Supports, contacts, interfaces and load introduction often dominate the result. Artificially rigid constraints or unrealistic load application can make a converged solution physically misleading.
Interpret, do not just report
Peak stresses near singularities, contact edges or idealised constraints need engineering interpretation. Useful FEA connects results back to allowable criteria, sensitivity, simpler calculations and expected structural behaviour.
This article is general information only. Project-specific decisions depend on the actual asset, duty, material, condition, evidence, applicable standards and jurisdiction.
